Hailing from Akron, Ohio, Steve excelled as a top hurdler at Walsh Jesuit High School. His athletic achievements led to his induction into Walsh's Athletic Hall of Fame. He continued his education and athletic career at Miami University of Ohio, where he earned a B.A. degree in Public Administration while captaining both the track and football teams.
After graduating, Steve joined the Denver Broncos in the NFL but was sidelined by a shoulder injury. After his recovery, he pursued a Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies at Howard University School of Divinity in Washington, D.C. Following his studies, he moved to Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota, where he implemented a drug and alcohol prevention program in the public and private school systems of North Dakota
Returning to Washington, D.C., Steve established the Washington, DC office of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and later transitioned to become a full-time speaker through PowerMoves, where he serves as the executive director. His speaking engagements have taken him to prestigious venues such as the White House, Capitol Hill, and the State Department, colleges and universities as well as various international locations including Zimbabwe, Ghana, Germany, Iraq, England, Australia, Israel, and the Dominican Republic. Steve also co-founded "The House," a safe haven for Southeast DC students to develop life skills and find purpose. Additionally, he serves as the national spokesperson for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ "One Way 2 Play - Drug Free" program. Today, Steve is a certified NFL Transition Coach, providing mentorship to NFL rookies and retirees. He is also a best-selling author, poet, lyricist, and master motivator. He and his wife, Dr. Karen Fitzhugh, have two daughters, one granddaughter, and have celebrated 34 years of marriage. Steve lives by the personal mantra, "Create a moment for life-change, and any life can be changed in a moment."
